HDMI 2.0 – What’s Up?

HDMIRecently the HDMI Forum, the non profit body that oversees the HDMI specification, announced that version 2.0 is coming. What is new in this new format? We are going to tell you as we take a quick look at the HDMI 2.0 format and what it can do for you.

Specs

The current standard till now has been version 1.4 which has boasted resolutions of 4,096×2,160-pixels at up to 24 frames per second and 3,820×2,160 up to 30fps. The new version 2.0 has added support for 4k 3d or 2160p double the resolution of 1080p and at a stunning 60 frames per second. It also has support for up to 32 audio channels, “dynamic auto lipsync” and additional CEC extensions.

Common Sense

While some of these number are confusing it is easy to remember that the changes to the standard are looking towards the future of television. Many of the movies are shot at 24 frames per second, but it is the video games, (xbox 360, ps4, and PCs) that are taking advantage of the resolutions and refresh rate of your television. This is not to say that movies will not change as Sony, Samsung and LG have 4K displays already in the market and many other manufacturers are rushing to have their 4K displays on store shelves.

Summing it Up

Considering the equipment and displays that you currently have installed at your home and your office HDMi 2.0 is not a big deal, but just as we are moving away from the good old VGA on our PCs and laptops so will the HDMI 1.4 drift off into the sunset as the new dawn of Ultra HD arrives. Your devices will have the new standard, HDMI version 2.0,  in the next couple of years and upgrades will be on their way. So don’t sweat it.
