Why Single Sourcing is Critical in Hospitality
Synergistic Effect of using a Single Source Audio Video Integrator
I was always taught that shopping around was a good thing. Now I know why buying from multiple sources for a single project may be the most costly thing you can do.
Let me give you an example when it comes to upgrading your property to high definition entertainment.
One of the tasks in the larger project of upgrading to HD is purchasing High Definition Hospitality TVs. Today you display HD programming you are required to use Digital Rights management for the programming. To decode those signals you need Pro:Idiom compliant, Mpeg-4, Hospitality Flat Panel Displays. To get better pricing, many of the hotel brands are now negotiating pricing directly with the manufacturers.
An example of that is Wyndham. Recently Wyndham Hotel Group negotiated a deal to have Hotel Solutions, a division of Groupe Dumoulin Electronique in Quebec, supply Samsung HD TVs to hotels at a discounted rate.
That is a great thing right?
The catch is Hotel Solutions doesn’t install or program Hospitality TVs. They are simply a middle man for Samsung that warehouses TVs until you need them shipped to you. Think Costco for Hospitality Electronics.
Once you have your TVs shipped to your property, what you have is a bunch of big boxes sitting in YOUR warehouse or storage. You then need to go out and find another company to un-box hundreds of TVS, transport them to the rooms, install the TVs, program the TVs (which can take as much as 30 minutes each) and then dispose of the boxes and other waste materials.
For some hotel properties that process alone could mean 3 different companies or a small army of your own employees.
And that is just one part of upgrading your property to high definition. There is TV Programming, SMATV Headend Signal Distribution systems (Com1000 or LG DRM), VOD/PPV systems, Guest Connectivity, as well as issues such as signal strength and degradation that is critical to a successful transition to HD TVs & programming.
A single source integrator like Commercial Satellite Audio and Video handles the entire process from start to finish as well as numerous other products & services the upgrade to High Definition requires. You don’t have to spend your time finding, vetting and talking to numerous vendors. That process can literally eat up hundreds of hours (weeks and weeks) of time for the GM, Chief Engineer and other hotel employees.
We guarantee you will get the best possible products and service at the best available price when you use Commercial Satellite for your Guest Entertainment needs – In-room, common areas, spas & fitness centers, or bars & restaurants.
You get peace of mind that you are getting the lowest price because we guarantee it. If you find a written quote for a lower price within 30 days of our quote, we will meet or beat it. Even the deal Wyndham negotiated with Samsung.
You get the very best technical expertise. Our Hospitality field supervisors have over 2 centuries of combined AV experience. Com1000 & LG DRM certification, Crestron Programming certification, low voltage licensing, audio video integration.
Most importantly, you are getting an audio video integrator that understands the BIG PICTURE of what your particular property’s needs are, not just a low price supplier of hardware.
Commercial Satellite Audio & Video is the answer to: Why Single Sourcing is Critical in Hospitality

Digital Signage – An Innovative and Cost-Effective Medium of Advertising
Digital Signage is a dynamic content display system which is used to broadcast information using a combination of software and hardware. It is becoming a popular visual medium to reach consumers across various locations and time zones. With the help of this technology, information can be transferred using electronic signs, LCD’s, LED’s, Plasma screens, scrolling message boards etc.
Initially, it was associated with high costs, but today, it has become more accessible to businesses and has proven to generate an excellent return on investment. Presentation of content in a wide range of formats and lower costs gives it an edge over the traditional static methods of advertising. This method follows the principle of installing screens, attracting attention and increasing sales and productivity.
Communication channels can be improved with the help of this technology. Its benefits are becoming obvious to people worldwide and it is one of the fastest growing marketing channels. This technology influences a customer’s behavior by attracting consumers to products, creating brand awareness and influencing their decisions. The result of using dynamic digital signage is the ability to increase sales using real time announcements and promotions while maintaining cost efficiency.
A digital signage system is a network of electronic devices that are controlled remotely from a central location. This solutions make it easier to add, remove or edit content. It makes the content information dynamic and is therefore replacing traditional static print signs and billboards. Electronic devices which work on this technology can transmit information using signage software and can be used to manage any type of display. This format is easy to integrate into existing networks using CAT5/5e/6 cables.
Digital signage is becoming a popular medium to reach people across various geographical locations. This form of advertising is creating a revolution in media and information industries. It is no longer the exclusive domain of high end retailers and is the latest choice of marketers. This technology is now penetrating stations, airports, hospitals, hotels, corporate boardrooms, cinemas as well as amusement parks and is working its way into mass as well as high end advertising. It is the future of out of home advertising and is being adopted globally.
LifeSize Video Conferencing Connecting Military Families
LifeSize uses high definition video conferencing to connect military families
Of all the uses for high definition video conferencing, the one that touches my heart is its use to connect military families around the world.
Those who choose to serve in their nations military make sacrifices in terms of family that most of us can only imagine. Some military personnel are spending 6, 9, even 12 months or more away from the ones they love. Having to miss birthdays, sporting events, school events and even sometimes the birth of a child can be taxing on the spirit.
So the advent of high definition video conferencing gives these brave men and women the opportunity to connect with their families in a very immersive manner. They get to see and hear each other in high definition via the LifeSize video conferencing system. Some call this Telepresence because of its high definition and immersive qualities. It’s almost like being there face to face.
Recently Lifesize provided an opportunity for members of the US military deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan to see their children rehearse and perform in a the play “The Wizard of Oz” at Camp One World in Austin, Texas via LifeSize video conferencing equipment.
You can see a video captured by the LifeSize Video Center at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-c__8l7pjI&hd=1
Children and parents got to share a moment in their lives that would have been otherwise lost to the necessities of military life. I cannot think of a better use of video conferencing.

Lifesize High Definition Video Conferencing
Advantages and Uses of Video Conferencing
Uses of Video conferencing
Video conferencing can be used in a host of different environments, which is one of the reasons the technology is so popular. General uses for video conferencing include business meetings, educational training or instruction and collaboration among health officials or other representatives. Thus far video conferencing has been used in the following fields:
- Telemedicine
- Telecommunication
- Education
- Surveillance
- Security
- Emergency Response
Advantages and Benefits of Video conferencing
Perhaps the biggest advantage or benefit video conferencing has to offer is the ability to meet with people in remote locations without incurring travel expenses or other expenses associated with face to face communication. Business meetings, educational meetings, health-care conferences and more can all be easily conducted thanks to video conferencing technology. Individuals living in remote areas can also use video conferencing to keep in touch if you will, with the world at large.
More people are easily accessed and contacted using video conferencing. Because of this technology information and knowledge are often disseminated at more rapid rates, and collaboration between people occurs more willingly and freely. Students can take advantage of video conferencing to take classes at distant locations that would normally be unavailable. They can also take classes that will accommodate busy schedules.
Video conferencing can stimulate better brainstorming, knowledge sharing and information gathering. Businesses can use video conferencing to provide presentations to key members of an organization or to solicit new clients in a professional manner, regardless of their location. The possibilities for communication are virtually endless thanks to video conferencing technologies.

The Digital Transition in San Diego
What is the digital TV (DTV) transition?
The switch from analog to digital broadcast television is referred to as the digital TV (DTV) transition. In 1996, the U.S. Congress authorized the distribution of an additional broadcast channel to each broadcast TV station so that they could start a digital broadcast channel while simultaneously continuing their analog broadcast channel. Later, Congress mandated that February 17, 2009 would be the last day for full-power television stations to broadcast in analog. Broadcast stations in all U.S. markets are currently broadcasting in both analog and digital. After February 17, 2009, full-power television stations will broadcast in digital only.
Why are we switching to DTV?
An important benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable broadcast spectrum for public safety communications (such as police, fire departments, and rescue squads). Also, some of the spectrum will be auctioned to companies that will be able to provide consumers with more advanced wireless services (such as wireless broadband).
Consumers also benefit because digital broadcasting allows stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, and digital is much more efficient than analog. For example, rather than being limited to providing one analog program, a broadcaster is able to offer a super sharp “high definition” (HD) digital program or multiple “standard definition” (SD) digital programs simultaneously through a process called “multicasting.” Multicasting allows broadcast stations to offer several channels of digital programming at the same time, using the same amount of spectrum required for one analog program.
So, for example, while a station broadcasting in analog on channel 7 is only able to offer viewers one program, a station broadcasting in digital on channel 7 can offer viewers one digital program on channel 7-1, a second digital program on channel 7-2, a third digital program on channel 7-3, and so on. This means more programming choices for viewers. Further, DTV can provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with analog technology.
